My international experience: Alexis BACH

Publié le May 12, 2017, Mis à jour le May 17, 2017

Alexis BACH is sharing his international experience in Hong Kong as an exchange student from our Grande Ecole programme.

Why did you decide to study in HKBU?

First I was looking for an environment that would give me a culture shock. Secondly, I was also seeking a successful environment, a major financial center that could match my professional ambitions.

Did you have pre-conceived ideas before going to HK?

In two words I expected a dynamic and crowded city.

What do you miss the most from France?

I guess I miss my family and friends the most. I also miss the high standard of living in France, the quality of food products and the transparency of information.

What did you find challenging?

People from Hong Kong speak good English, but their mother tongue is Cantonese, which is a Chinese dialect. When they are amongst themselves they will speak Cantonese, which is quite challenging for me to understand. For this reason, I’m trying to learn Cantonese and Mandarin which is in fact much easier than expected.

What advice would you give to future students studying in HK?

Hong Kong people are generally nice and trustworthy people, however, they can be a bit shy so don’t hesitate to talk to them. Hong Kong is a really expensive city, it’s important to save money before planning to move there.

How would you describe your experience in three words?

, as I’ve lived in Hong Kong since June 2016 and it seems like I arrived 2 months ago. Safe, for the expats in Hong Kong. Crime is not common. Pleased, thanks to this experience I met people from different social environments and nationalities.

What are your future projects?

I’ll graduate from my Master’s program in May, therefore I am looking for a graduate job in financial controlling. My plan is to stay in Hong Kong or a similar city. My job search is ongoing, and I hope to update you with good news very soon!
