Dr. Kevin Mac Gabhann, is celebrating his first year as the new Managing Director of the HERMES network

Dr. Kevin Mac Gabhann, Associate Dean of International Relations at EM Strasbourg Business School was appointed as Managing Director of the HERMES network last year.

Dr. Kevin Mac Gabhann, has almost 20 years of experience in academics and management in international higher education.

Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Kevin began his international career in the United States and Japan before arriving in Strasbourg in 2000. Kevin joined EM Strasbourg Business School in 2003 and in 2009, after embarking on his Ph.D became an Associate Professor. He was promoted to Director of International Relations in 2012 and Associate Dean of International Relations in 2014. He is responsible for developing the business school’s international relations strategy and oversees international student affairs. This includes under the auspices of the international relations office, organising study abroad exchange programs for approximately 500 outgoing students, and 700 incoming students within a network of 240 partner universities in 52 countries. In addition, Kevin’s office oversees 17 double degree programs and a host of short-term customized programs including two annual summer schools.

Kevin obtained his Master’s degree at the University College Dublin and earned his Ph.D in Management from the University of Strasbourg. His thesis is entitled Managing Ethno-cultural Diversity in Health Care Service Delivery: The Irish Experience.

In 2019, Kevin was elected the Managing Director of HERMES – The HERMES network was founded in 1997 as an initiative of EM Strasbourg Business School. This strategic alliance, composed of 26 leading education institutions from 15 different countries, aims to offer dual degree programs in Management. The members collaborate together to define double degree study programs, exchange professors and organize joint research projects. Going forward the network aims to further develop its research activities while introducing new innovative double degree programs and establishing exchange of best practices on issues relevant to international higher education.

Kevin specialises in the field of International Human Resources Management and more specifically in intercultural management. He lectures in International Human Resource Management, Intercultural Management, Management of International Teams, Diversity Management and International  Negotiations.

He has also undertaken visiting scholar positions in universities, such as Trinity College Dublin, University College of Denver, Universidad Panamericana, Marquette University and frequently is requested to give lectures to specific groups from institutions such as University of Adelaide, Texas A&M, Pepperdine University, Boston College, Macquarie University, University of Brighton, Henley Business School and the University of Reading.

As Director of International Relations, he travels to different parts of the world negotiating new institutional partnerships, visiting EM Strasbourg Business school’s partner universities and representing the school at different international conferences. Most recently, Kevin presented in 2019 at the EAIE conference in Helsinki on the Greening of Internationalisation and on sustainability and mobility at the annual British Council’s conference in Berlin, and in 2020 on the role of Consortia and Networks in the Development of International Partnerships at the Association of UK Higher Education European Officers conference.
Kevin is a founding member of CANIE (Climate Action Network for International Educators) and has along with his team recently introduced a green mobility program at EM Strasbourg

A qualified Intercultural Practitioner, Kevin also specialises in cross-cultural management consulting ans has worked with several mutinational companies such as Merck-Milipore and Steelcase.
